Start with one clear question. This guide helps you turn it into a workable plan, a defensible analysis and a readable final project.

You do not need to use every section. Start with the question and the six-sentence canvas, then return to the part that matches your next decision. Your degree handbook and supervisor’s requirements always come first.

01 · Thesis canvas

Write the thesis in six sentences before you write chapters.

Begin from the research question and analysis brief rather than inventing a second version of the project here. These answers will change as the work develops. That is useful. If you cannot yet complete a sentence clearly, you have found the next piece of thinking, not a reason to hide behind more reading.

01 · Question

This thesis asks…

Make it specific enough to answer, but important enough to deserve sustained attention.

02 · Significance

This question matters because…

Name the intellectual, practical or social consequence of not knowing the answer.

03 · Existing knowledge

The strongest existing answer is…

State the best current explanation fairly before you identify its weakness.

04 · Opening

That answer is incomplete because…

Locate the unresolved tension, missing evidence, flawed assumption or neglected context.

05 · Route

I will investigate this by…

Connect the question to the evidence and method without pretending the method is the question.

06 · Contribution

The reader should leave understanding…

Describe the change in knowledge or interpretation that the thesis can honestly deliver.

Pressure test

Can the project deliver a meaningful answer?

Test the logic before committing to the wording. A polished question is weak if the available evidence cannot answer it, and a neat result is weak if you cannot explain what it means. The worked medical-science examples show the difference between topics, questions and hypotheses.

Research question

Interrogate every word.

  • Are the central terms defined rather than assumed?
  • Are the people, place, material, period and boundaries clear?
  • Can the available evidence genuinely answer this question?
  • What would a convincing answer need to demonstrate?
  • Would the answer matter beyond simply completing the project?
Hypothesis, where appropriate

Propose an answer to the defined question.

  • Does it follow from a reasoned explanation or prior evidence?
  • Are population, comparison, outcome, timeframe and target quantity already specified?
  • Is a directional hypothesis justified before outcomes are inspected?
  • For confirmatory work, were the hypothesis and analysis plan pre-specified?
  • If the work is descriptive or exploratory, is the absence of formal H₀/H₁ stated honestly?

Open the statistical foundations bridge for study design, populations, variable roles, missingness, bias and confounding. Then use the hypothesis methods note for H₀/H₁, sidedness, pre-specification and the limits of frequentist conclusions.

Translation and meaning

Do not stop at “what did I find?”

Explain what the finding means for the question, whose experience or circumstances it represents, which other explanations remain plausible, how far the conclusion can travel and why the answer matters.

02 · Thinking prompts

Aim for intellectual control, not performative complexity.

These prompts invite you to ask whether major choices have a reason and whether each section has a clear purpose. They are suggestions for making and explaining decisions, not complete instructions.

Precision beats breadth.

A narrower question answered deeply is stronger than a large topic surveyed vaguely.

Ask: what can I remove without weakening the answer?

Synthesis beats catalogue.

Organise the literature around ideas, tensions and evidence rather than one author after another.

Ask: what relationship between sources am I revealing?

Justification beats fashion.

A suitable method should fit the question, material and limits of the project.

Ask: why this approach, and what would an alternative miss?

Interpretation beats output.

Results become knowledge only when you explain what they mean and what they do not mean.

Ask: what is the most defensible interpretation?

Honesty beats false certainty.

Thoughtful limits increase trust when you explain their consequences rather than merely list them.

Ask: which conclusion changes if this assumption fails?

Reader control beats display of labour.

The finished thesis should present the best argument, not reproduce every step of the journey.

Ask: what does the reader need at this exact moment?

The reader test

After the abstract and introduction, can an intelligent reader say what you are asking, why it matters, how you will answer it and what kind of contribution is possible?

03 · Working process

Seven decisions shape the thesis.

The process is iterative: evidence will refine the question and writing will expose weaknesses in the thinking. Return to earlier decisions deliberately, not silently.

  1. 01

    Question

    Start from the completed brief.

    Move from the substantive problem to one primary question, then state a hypothesis only when it serves that question. Keep the population, design, variables, timeframe, target quantity and data limits visible.

    Ready when: the question is answerable with the available evidence and its significance fits in one clear paragraph.
  2. 02

    Contribution

    Decide what the work can add.

    A contribution may be a new application, synthesis, comparison, interpretation, test, replication or clarification. Name it early and revise it honestly.

    Ready when: you can complete “existing work tells us X; this thesis will show Y”.
  3. 03

    Design

    Make the evidence answer the question.

    Specify the people, texts, records, observations, measurements or other material you will use; how you will interpret or analyse it; ethics; information management; assumptions and foreseeable limits.

    Ready when: each important design choice has a reason tied directly to the question.
  4. 04

    Literature

    Build a conversation, not a catalogue.

    Search deliberately and record exactly how you searched, then save each useful source as you read. Compare sources by claim, evidence, method, assumptions, limitations and relevance.

    Ready when: the review explains how the problem emerged and why your route through it is necessary.

    Analysis

    Maintain the methods decision log.

    Document preparation, coding, exclusions, transformations, assumptions, diagnostics, deviations and reasons. Keep an interpretation record of estimates, uncertainty, alternatives and limitations rather than reconstructing decisions from memory.

    Ready when: an informed reader can trace a finding back to the question, evidence and decisions that produced it.

    Argument

    Draft to discover what you think.

    Lead paragraphs with the point the reader needs. Supply evidence, evaluate it and show how it advances the answer. Write before everything feels settled.

    Ready when: the topic sentences alone reveal a coherent line of reasoning.
  7. 07

    Revision

    Edit from the argument outward.

    First test the central claim and structure; then evidence and method; then paragraphs and sentences; finally use the referencing audit before checking figures, formatting and submission requirements.

    Ready when: you have checked the complete document against the handbook and current official requirements.

04 · Argument architecture

Give every part one clear job.

Your handbook may require different titles or a different order. Whatever the structure, each part should advance the same argument without duplicating work done elsewhere.

Problem, context, precise opening, aim, possible contribution and a reliable map of what follows.

Method

The justified route

Translate the brief and methods decision log into what you did and why, with enough transparency to judge quality, ethics and fitness for purpose. For survey work, use the Survey Methods Handbook to justify the mode, instrument, sample, fieldwork and processing. For regression, carry the documented rationale from the covariate-selection note.

Findings

The disciplined evidence

Use the interpretation record to organise estimates, uncertainty and diagnostics around the question rather than every output produced. Read the estimate and confidence interval before the p-value; use the confidence-interval note and then the p-value methods note for a defensible reporting pattern.

Discussion

The intellectual work

Answer the question using the estimates, assumptions, alternatives, strengths, limitations and relationship to existing knowledge.

Conclusion

The proportionate landing

A direct answer, the contribution and the most defensible next step, without introducing new evidence.

The paragraph test

Claim → evidence → evaluation → connection

Not every paragraph needs a rigid formula, but every paragraph needs a reason to exist. What point are you making? What supports it? How strong is that support? How does it move the thesis towards its answer?

05 · Feedback

Use feedback to sharpen judgement.

Good feedback conversations are about decisions. Bring enough focused material for another person to see the reasoning and the risk, not an unexplained pile of pages.

06 · Go deeper resources

Open the right resource for the decision in front of you.

This is a deliberately small set. Each resource has a clear job. Use it to solve a problem and return to the thesis, not to postpone writing by collecting more advice.

07 · Final audit

Before you submit, review the actual document.

Use this review against the actual document, not from memory. Check the handbook and current official requirements alongside it, and identify where the relevant evidence can be found.
